Elysium Review (Minor Spoilers)

Summary

Elysium is the idea of a place that only superior people can go to. In the year 2154, Matt Damon plays a rebellious ex-criminal, Max, who lives on Earth, which has become practically a massive shanty town due to an extreme lack of resources, and is trying to turn his life around. However, once fatally injured at work, he has less than a week to make it to the wealthy space habitat, Elysium, where he can receive the advance health care they possess in order to save his life.

Acting

Oh Lordy, some of the acting in this film on par with Piranha 3D. Jodie Foster - the star of some very respectable films - has never done a worse performance in my opinion, she had a peculiar accent that seemed to change throughout the film and some of her lines were delivered as if she was in a low budget pantomime. Matt Damon's performance was good - I guess - but his character didn't have any substance, at the start of the film he plays this wise cracking bad ass, but then for the other three quarters of the film he just seems like a normal bloke. Even the minor parts such as the dying girl were cringlingly bad. It was great to see how racism in 2154 is practically a thing of the past, because everyone on Earth is in the same sinking boat, however some of the accents of the largely multicultural cast were incredibly hard to understand, I often found myself trying to figure out what had just been said and then missing the next piece of dialogue. I have nothing against people with strong accents however I would have preferred if their pronunciation was a bit clearer.

Story

For an idea that had a lot of potential, the storyline of the film was bad - to say the least. The film was full of plot holes and inaccuracies and even the ending which I expected to be a reflection of life turned out to be *(Spoiler) the classic tale of a selfish guy becoming unselfish*.

Presentation

Despite Elysium's many flaws, its presentation did not disappoint. One of the scenes was especially good and unlike anything I've seen before. Action and explosions were not in short supply and is what made the film bearable and even quite enjoyable at times.

In Conclusion...

Elysium disappointed on so many levels, yet was pretty enough to trick you into thinking you enjoyed it. If you're in the mood for some cool action, consider watching it - but I would wait until it's on DVD first. 5/10
